Has fashion got lost?

Friday, 27 June 2014

My sister and I were discussing the other evening, our frustrations about how much fashion has changed in the past few years, but not for the better.
I  feel that amazing fashion got created in 2011, and this fashion got lost. Amazing collections were created with devine pieces, which I still would love to wear now, have been forgotten and we are now in an era of fashion that is too abrasive.
When I wander around the high street I am attacked by garish patterns, colours, styles- it all looks as if the aim is to emulate a toddler who got lost at a festival, with the jelly shoes, dungarees, frilly ankle socks and TINY denim shorts.
And then I browse through my once favourite designers- Celine; it is a mess of huge squiggles, colours that look like the unwanted colours in a crayon set and some unwearable, peculiar jewellery…
Stella McCartney has lost her elegance, as I flick through her FW14 slideshow on style.com and Austin powers comes to mind- that awful burgundy suit, and then I look at the chunky oxford shoes, and the thought comes into my head of "those are some godawful shoes".
I feel as if fashion has lost its wearibilty of making women feel elegant, feminine, and sexy. Perhaps this is the new found feminism of dressing in garish costume, however I do not find this a way of liberating who women are.
I look through old photos taken by Richard avedon and i just love the styling- women look beautiful! I come across Jacqueline Kennedy on my pinterest and just lust after her wardrobe! The aline skirts which flatter the best part of a womens thigh, without revealing too much- just enough to feel liberated that we are women, and are strong enough to be able to bear some leg, regardless of others opinions.
I believe that sex appeal comes from wondering what is under the clothing, without it being thrusted in your face. But on that note, there is the other side where many of the collections the women are dressed in masculine clothing, that cover, which puts sex appeal into the negatives.
Style feels as if it is losing its battle for feminism, we don't need to dress like men to feel liberated, nor do we need to feel the need to show as much flesh as possible, to feel that we are strong as it is "our choice to wear what we want".
I am by no means disrespecting these talented designers, I just wish they could return back to their old ways, but still create new pieces, and still evolve as designers.

APC roma sandals

Tuesday, 24 June 2014

APC and I have forged a very good relationship this spring/ summer season. I have practically coveted everything within the collections, from footwear, to skirts, bags, wallets, shirts, jumpers, dresses- yes, everything.
My daily wardrobe consists of at least one APC item- all of which I gracefully share with my twin sister; who records these purchases on her style blog.
My most recent item from APC, finally belongs to me! And, me alone- thanks to my Mother, who had bought me a gift from a recent trip to New york. Oh, how I was ever so jealous that she visited the New York APC store without me!
These are the babies which will be wrapped around my feet for the entire summer:

The mini wedge is small enough to feel practically flat, but gives me that "extra" boost of height. It also  makes the style ever so slightly different from every day flat sandals. The wedge also adds some extra comfort; I could imagine myself wandering the streets of London all day long- or, where I live the nearest alternative city would be Newcastle ( I can always dream).

I will most likely wear them on warm summer days in the countryside/ villages walking my dogs and  for evening drinks with friends , so I shall definitely get lots of wear out of them!

Currently in my basket

Saturday, 7 June 2014

This cardigan from Toast is currently on my wish-list, and sat in my online basket at Toast.co.uk waiting for me to hit the checkout button.
I love the collar on it, its quite unusual and i think will go nicely with a collarless sleeveless top, to be worn on a chilly summers night and through into autumn.
Plus it is in the sale, which is a factor that makes me want it even more!

Summer tops

Thursday, 29 May 2014

I have suffered the first summer day dilemma- what do I wear?
I always mean to plan ahead so that I do not get caught out, however my bank balance the past few months has not allowed me to invest in my "hot weather" summer wardrobe. Another reason for this is the weather: as I look out the window, I feel far from compelled to wear a sleeveless top but rather to hide under a long sleeved sweater (the sky is filled with clouds and there is most likely a cold breeze)

However, on the rarity that a hot day does occur these are my choices of blouses: (left to right)

1) Black Crane
2) Le Vestiare De Jeanne
3) Isabel Marant
4) APC

All of these blouses are relatively similar, they are boxy and high necked. They will still appear summery without leaving me too chilly and revealed.

Evening bags

Tuesday, 13 May 2014

Evening bags are my most loved- but hated bag.
My choice in them is rather expensive, which makes my style quite unattainable to be worn on a night on the tiles- especially living in the UK.
These are my 4 choices that I think are suitable for both an evening meal, or/and out "on the town".
The APC bag, I would wear in both situations as I think that it is quite understated, but would withstand a night out.
The jersey chanel, I adore. Firstly, the worry of scratching leather is abolished, and it also has a more laid back feel to it, however the price range it slightly high, but it being jersey would it get that damaged? Maybe this would be best for just a quiet evening...
The Louis Vuitton Sofia Coppola clutch would be perfect for an evening meal, or a respectable cocktail party, the latter however does not occur in my lifestyle unfortunately. I would most certainly not wear this beauty of a bag clubbing, I would either drop it, leave it in a taxi or misplace it somewhere.
And lastly, the Céline Trio. I already own this bag in cream and it has been fabulous at withstanding the british town! It holds everything, keys, ID, money etc. However I am growing tired of the cream colour as I want a more subtle colour (I love black- it is failsafe)
I think that the winner would be the trio, however the Chanel is running very close!
